First to ever sweep Player and Freshman of the Week awards three times
CHICAGO – Less than 24 hours after smashing two BIG EAST records, Aneesah Morrow set another conference standard on Monday morning.
The indomitable freshman became the first in league history to sweep both the BIG EAST Player and Freshman of the Week awards three times in a season.
Morrow averaged an eye-popping 24.7 points and 19.7 rebounds in a 2-1 week for DePaul (18-5, 10-2) highlighted by Sunday's record-breaking performance at Seton Hall.
The rookie corralled 27 rebounds – eclipsing not only the BIG EAST single-game freshman record (20) but the overall standard (25) as well. The BIG EAST rookie record had been on the books since 1984 while the overall mark dated back to 1986.
Morrow notched three straight double-doubles beginning with 30 points, 14 rebounds against No. 10/9 Connecticut on Wednesday followed by 22 points and 18 rebounds against St. John's on Friday
Along with the 27 boards in the 85-65 win over Seton Hall, she added 22 points. Morrow now leads the nation with 13.4 rebounds per game and is also tops in total rebounds (309), offensive rebounds per game (5.7) and double-doubles (18 in 23 games).
In addition, the former Simeon All-Stater is second in the country in total points and field goals.
Recency bias aside, Morrow has been on an absolute tear. The 6-foot, 1-inch power forward has 139 points and 89 rebounds in her last five games---an average of 27.8 points and 17.8 rebounds.
Included in that span was the 80-78 loss to No. 10/9 UConn featuring 6-5 Olivia Nelson-Ododa, 6-5 Dorka Juhasz, 6-3 Aaliyah Edwards and 6-5 Piath Gabriel.
In that game, Morrow became only the fourth opponent to finish with 30 points and double digit rebounds in UConn's legendary history. The other three---Tennessee's Candace Parker, Louisville's Angel McCoughtry and Notre Dame's Jackie Young---were all the first player selected in the WNBA Draft.
Over these last five games, Morrow became the first player since 2010 to score 30 points with double-digit rebounds in three consecutive games.
Current Washington Mystics forward Alysha Clark did it at Middle Tennessee State.
The 27 rebounds tied Morrow for second in DePaul history with Tracy Manuel (vs. Evansville, Feb. 8, 1985) and was just one shy of the all-time record set by Latasha Byears against Northeastern Illinois on Nov. 29, 1996.
It is a single-game high in the NCAA this season and the most since California's Kristine Anigwe pulled down 30 on March 3, 2019.
In BIG EAST-only games, Morrow is averaging 23.7 points and 15 rebounds. Overall, she is at 20.9 points and 13.4 rebounds.
Morrow and her teammates will be back at Wintrust Arena on Friday for a BIG EAST showdown against Creighton (15-5, 10-2) which is currently tied with DePaul for second place.
