Blue Demons kickoff year-long virtual campaign to commemorate rich history of women's sports
CHICAGO - DePaul Athletics is set to commemorate its rich history of success and tradition in women's athletics with its celebration of the 50th Anniversary of Title IX in a year-long virtual campaign beginning in January.
Title IX, the federal civil rights law that prohibits sex-based discrimination in any educational institution that receives federal funding, was enacted on June 23, 1972 and gave women many more opportunities to play sports at the collegiate level.
DePaul laid the foundation for success in women's sports in 1974 when women's volleyball, basketball and tennis were introduced as intercollegiate sports with the help of physical education professor Jean Nordberg. Softball was introduced in 1977 and Cross Country/Track & Field in 1982. Women's soccer played its first season in 1996.Â
The inaugural female student-athletes to compete in the scarlet and blue following the passage of Title IX paved the way for thousands of women for generations to come to have the opportunity to display their many talents to the university community and City of Chicago. Equitable opportunity broke down barriers for Blue Demons past and present to flourish on and off the field of competition. In 48 years of women's varsity sports in Lincoln Park, student-athletes have won numerous conference championships, advanced to postseason play, and earned All-America certificates while reaching new heights in the classroom.Â
Through content released each Tuesday, the campaign will provide education on the passage of the groundbreaking legislation while celebrating the stories and accomplishments of former and current Blue Demon student-athletes, coaches and staff. Historical information and multimedia content showcasing the breadth of Title IX at DePaul can be found here.Â
DePaul Athletics encourages fans, alumni, and community members to share memories, stories and experiences throughout the year on social media, as the department highlights pioneers, letterwinners, coaches and staff that were trailblazers and continue to empower women today and every day.
