Providence claims 1-0 win
CHICAGO -Â DePaul men's soccer suffered a setback in their BIG EAST home opener on Saturday afternoon at Wish Field. The Friars won the contest after scoring a penalty kick goal in the 73rd minute.
The first half began with much back and forth between the Blue Demons and the Friars. Freshman Felipe Corral had a promising look in the fourth minute, but it soared above the net.
Cade Hagan followed up with a shot of his own, but it was saved by Providence goalkeeper Lukas Burns. Neither team was able to find the back of the net in the first 45 minutes of play, going into halftime tied nil-nil. Goalkeeper Gandhi Cruz ended the first half with two saves on four Providence shots.
The second half got off with a shot by Jake Fuderer that drifted right. Diego Benitez added a shot of his own which also went wide right.Â
Providence's Ramzi Qawasmy scored the penalty kick goal in the 73rd minute.Â
After the only goal of the match was scored, both teams continued to trade shots. Cruz added two more saves in the second half on six shots.Â
