DePaul Drops Four-Set Match at Xavier

CINCINNATI, Ohio – DePaul volleyball came up short in a four-set match at Xavier on Friday evening. With the setback, the Blue Demons fell to 6-13 (2-5 BIG EAST) while Xavier moved to 11-6 (4-3 BIG EAST).

Set scores of match were: 19-25, 25-22, 18-25, 22-25.

Jill Pressly picked up her ninth double-double of the 2022 season with an inspired performance of 22 kills and a career-high 24 digs to lead the way for the Blue Demons. Bailey Nelson provided firepower on the right side with a season-high 16 kills while middle blocker Aly Kindelberger added eight kills on .333 hitting in addition to putting up five blocks.

Setters Maggie Jones and Ashley Cudiamat each notched double-doubles. Jones dished out 20 assists and picked up 12 digs while Cudiamat added 27 helpers and 12 digs. Junior libero covered the court picking up a match-high 32 digs.

Xavier was led by Delaney Hogan's 20 kills while Anna Taylor added 13.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
Set One: The two sides traded points before a three-point run from Xavier put the Musketeers in front 16-13. Trailing by as many as five, the Blue Demons clawed back to within three at 21-18 on a pair of Pressly kills. Xavier claimed four of the next five points to pick up the first set.

Set Two: Xavier opened a 7-1 lead in the second set to force an early DePaul timeout. The Blue Demons snapped an 11-0 Musketeers run on an Ellison swing on the outside. With Kindelberger behind the service line, the Blue Demons stormed back to come within four points trailing 16-12. DePaul capped a 16-6 run on consecutive Pressly kills to shrink Xavier's advantage to one 18-17. The Blue Demons went on to claim the set and even the match at 1-1.

Set Three: Six-consecutive DePaul errors allowed the Musketeers to jump in front 12-5 in the early stages of the third set. The Blue Demons went on to stave off a pair of set points on a back-to-back Pressly kills, but it wasn't enough as Xavier clinched the third set 25-18 and took a 2-1 lead on the match.

Set Four: Xavier utilized a three-point spurt to run out to a 13-7 lead. DePaul cut the deficit to three on Ellison's fifth kill of the match late in the third set before Nelson slammed home a kill cross court to come within two at 22-20. An Ellison service ace knotted the score at 22 before Xavier rattled off a three-point run to take the set 25-22 and the match 3-1.
