DePaul Defeats Marquette for First Conference Win

Blue Demons earn three points on Wednesday
CHICAGO -Â DePaul men's soccer (4-4-6, 1-2-4 BIG EAST) earned their first BIG EAST conference win of the 2022 season. The Blue Demons defeated Marquette (4-8-3, 0-4-3 BIG EAST) 1-0 on Wednesday afternoon at Wish Field.Â
Marquette tallied the first shot of the game in the second minute, and added a second in the 15th. Defender Ethan Gordon provided a block on the shot in the 15th minute to keep the match scoreless.Â
Both sides tallied an even first half of play, going into halftime tied 0-0. DePaul ended the half with five shots to Marquette's four and goalkeeper Gandhi Cruz totaled one save in the first 45 minutes.
The Blue Demons came out of the break looking to score. Julian Saldana took his first shot of the match in the 53rd minute. Saldana's shot hit the left goal post and Sam Moore took a shot off of the ricochet. Moore's shot went wide right.Â
In the 77th minute, Felipe Corral made a pass to Marek Gonda on the right side of the field. Gonda dribbled into the box and was fouled by Marquette, resulting in a penalty kick for the Blue Demons. Jake Fuderer took the penalty kick and notched the ball on the left side of the net for his second goal of the season.
The final minutes of play consisted of both sides trading shots, but Marquette was never able to score an equalizer.Â
The Blue Demons defense was able to hold the Golden Eagles scoreless for the first time since their Oct. 5 matchup at Villanova. Gandhi Cruz recorded his fifth shutout of the season and earned five saves on the afternoon.
UP NEXT: The Blue Demons will travel to Storrs, Conn. for a Saturday evening matchup with the UConn Huskies. First touch is set for 6 p.m. CT.Â
