Blue Demons Blanked at UConn

DePaul held scoreless on Saturday
CHICAGO -Â DePaul men's soccer (4-5-6, 1-3-4 BIG EAST) was held scoreless by the Huskies on Saturday night. The UConn Huskies (5-6-2, 2-3-2 BIG EAST) were able to get their lone goal of the match in the middle of the first half, winning 1-0.
The Huskies dominated the first half of play. UConn fired off 14 shots and Okem Chime scored the first and only goal of the match in the 23rd minute.Â
Goalkeeper Gandhi Cruz earned his first save of the night in the 10th minute. Cruz ended the first half with three saves on four shots on goals.Â
The Huskies held a 1-0 lead at halftime.
Cade Hagan fired off the first shot of the evening for the Blue Demons in the 65th minute. UConn's goalkeeper Michael Stone earned his only save of the night on the shot. DePaul was unable to find an equalizer in the second half of play, but were able to fire off two additional shots.Â
The best attempts of the night for the Blue Demons came within the final minutes of play. David Gripman made a pass to Jacob Huth on the right side of the box. Huth passed the ball to his right and tried to hit Diego Benitez. Benitez slid into the goalie box, but the ball stayed in front of the net. UConn's Michael Stone got out and grabbed the ball before the Blue Demons were able to make additional contact with the ball.
Gandhi Cruz finished the match with three saves on four shots on goal. The Blue Demons defense were able to hold the Huskies to six shots in the second half. Ethan Gordon and Grant Herbek were a strong presence in the backfield as they deflected many of UConn's shots all night.
UP NEXT: DePaul will have a week off before they head to Omaha, Neb. for a head-to-head matchup with Creighton. First touch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. CT on Saturday, Oct. 29.Â
