Longhorns outlast Blue Demons 105-62 in exhibition matchup for Uvalde, Texas community
AUSTIN, Texas – AUSTIN, Texas – DePaul women's basketball fell to third-ranked Texas 105-62 in a charity exhibition matchup on Sunday afternoon at Moody Center. In a game where all ticket proceeds benefited Uvalde CISD Moving Forward Foundation, the host Longhorns used explosive second and third quarters to pick up the win.
Aneesah Morrow tallied a double-double to lead the Blue Demons with 20 points and 16 rebounds while Anaya Peoples added 14 points and added five boards in her DePaul debut. Darrione Rogers totaled nine points while collecting two rebounds and dishing out two assists.
The Longhorns defensive pressure stifled the Blue Demons offense to a 32.3 percent field goal percentage and 29 turnovers in the preseason matchup
DePaul trailed by four in the early going, but not for long as the Blue Demons piled in five field goals on their next five attempts to jump in front 10-6. The Longhorns answered right back with a nine-point run of their own to take a 14-12 lead. DePaul went without a field goal for the final 3:37 of the first quarter, but a string of five free throws from Rogers and Peoples closed the gap with the Blue Demons trailing 25-22 after 10 minutes of play.
Texas continued to apply the full court press, outscoring the Blue Demons 15-0 to begin the second quarter, running out to a 40-22 lead. Back-to-back buckets from Peoples followed by a Kendall Holmes triple cut the deficit to 11. The Blue Demons went into the locker room trailing 58-27. Through the first 20 minutes, Morrow led DePaul with 11 points and nine rebounds while Peoples and Rogers chipped in nine apiece.
DePaul was held to just three field goals in the third stanza as Texas held a 80-46 advantage heading into the final period.
Morrow netted eight points in the fourth quarter, while Peoples and freshman Madisen Wardell added four apiece. The host 'Horns closed out the win with a 7-0 run in the final 2:15
Former Blue Demon Sonya Morris led four Texas players in double figures with 21 points.
DePaul will open the regular season on Wednesday, Nov. 9 against American at Wintrust Arena. Tipoff is slated for 7 p.m. with the season opener serving as a Veterans Day Salute to Service.
