
DePaul Swept by St. John’s in Queens

Blue Demons falter to high powered Red Storm offense
QUEENS, N.Y. – DePaul volleyball could not withstand the potent attack of the St. John's Red Storm in a 3-0 decision at Carnesecca Arena on Saturday afternoon.
St. John's, the nation's leader in kills, outpaced the Blue Demon offense with 49 kills at a .287 clip compared to DePaul's 37 kills and .176 attack efficiency.
Set scores of the match were: 16-25, 21-25, 24-26.
Freshman Taylor Underwood and junior Jill Pressly carried the Blue Demons on the outside with 15 and 12 kills, respectively. Underwood added seven digs while Pressly chipped in four digs and a block.
Maggie Jones dished out 27 helpers while Rachel Krasowski led the back line with a match-high 13 digs.
St. John's (13-6, 4-2 BIG EAST) saw three attackers register double-digit kills led by Giorgia Walther's 17 terminations.
How it Happened
Set One: Back-to-back attack errors from DePaul allowed St John's to take a 10-4 lead. The Red Storm ballooned their lead to 23-14 and went on to take the set 25-16. DePaul hit just .167 in the first set while St. John's totaled a .531 attack efficiency.
Set Two: Underwood's sixth kill of the match put DePaul in front 8-5 in the early going of the second set. St. John's used a five-point run to narrow the Blue Demon advantage to 15-14. DePaul responded to take a 19-15 lead on a Katelynn Oxley kill but the Red Storm would not go away easily claiming seven of the next eight points to take a 22-20 lead and eventually a 25-21 set victory.
Set Three: A four-point run allowed DePaul to take a 14-11 lead and force a St. John's timeout. Out of the break, the Red Storm rattled off five points of their own to jump in front 17-16. St. John's took a 21-18 advantage before DePaul roared back to take a 23-22 lead on a Red Storm misfire. Pressly's 12th kill staved off a match point before St. John's clinched the victory on a Rachele Rastelli kill and DePaul attack error.
Up Next: DePaul (6-12, 2-4) will hit the road Oct. 14-16 for a pair of BIG EAST matches at Xavier and Creighton. The Blue Demons will travel to Cincinnati, Ohio on Friday, Oct. 14 for a 5 p.m. CT match at the Cintas Center before making the trip to Omaha to face Creighton on Sunday, Oct. 16 at 1 p.m. Both matches are scheduled to be streamed on FloSports.
