
Blue Demons Travel to Open BIG EAST Play

NEW YORK – Coming off back-to-back overtime wins, the DePaul men's basketball team heads east for the opening game of BIG EAST conference play. The Blue Demons are set to take on St. John's, Wednesday, Dec. 7 in a 5:30 p.m. CT matchup on FS1. Fans can also listen to the radio broadcast on DePaulBlueDemons.com.
DePaul (5-3) won consecutive games in overtime for the first time in program history, following an impressive 17-point second half comeback against Loyola-Chicago Saturday afternoon. The Blue Demons were led by National and BIG EAST Player of the Week, Javan Johnson, who scored 27 points, six assists and four rebounds against the Ramblers.
SCOUTING DEPAUL
Johnson earned his player of the week honors after a week where he averaged 27.5 points, 4.5 assists and 4.5 rebounds per game while shooting 61.3 percent from the floor. He ranks second in the BIG EAST and top-60 nationally with 18.4 points per game. Johnson and Mo Gibson have combined for a lethal scoring duo, averaging a combined 35.8 points per game and ranking 1-2 in three-point shooting percentage in the BIG EAST.
As a team, DePaul has been boosted by their consistency at the free throw line. The Blue Demons are averaging 16.2 free throws per game and shooting 78.8 percent at the line, which ranks 12th nationally.
SCOUTING ST. JOHN'S
St. John's (8-1) enters BIG EAST play coming off their first loss of the season against No. 23 Iowa State Sunday afternoon. Posh Alexander led the team with 14 points in the 71-60 loss. The Red Storm's strength this season has been their rebounding, ranking top-15 nationally and being led by Joel Soriano's 12.3 average.
Mike Anderson is in his fourth season as St. John's head coach and holds an 8-7 record against the Blue Demons, including his previous time at UAB.
THE SERIES
St. John's holds a slim lead in the all-time series, 29-22, but the last four meetings have been a back-and-forth affair. The two teams split their regular-season meetings in 2021-22, with St. John's taking the edge in the BIG EAST tournament. DePaul's last win in Carneseca Arena came Feb. 20, 2021 in an 88-83 win.
