
Blue Demons Can't Hold Off Butler

David Jones led five players in double figures with 17 points in two-point defeat
CHICAGO – DePaul led by as many as nine points, but the visiting Bulldogs came back and claimed a 73-71 win at Wintrust Arena. David Jones led five players in double figures with 17 points.
After the Blue Demons took an early lead, Butler reeled off eight straight points to take an 8-4 advantage. DePaul then scored nine of the game's next 11 points highlighted by back-to-back three-pointers from Jones and Jalen Terry before a Yor Anei free throw saw the lead increase to 13-10 with 12:39 left in the first half.
The two sides traded baskets over the next five minutes before a 10-point flurry for DePaul made the score 31-24. Courvoisier McCauley followed his own miss and scored to give the Blue Demons the seven-point advantage at the five-minute mark.
DePaul (12-12, 3-11 BIG EAST) went scoreless over the final three minutes of the first half and Butler took advantage as the team went into halftime tied at 35-35.
The Blue Demons methodically stretched out the lead again and took a nine-point lead as Terry's third three-pointer of the night made the score 59-50 with 8:46 on the clock.
Butler (13-13, 6-9 BIG EAST) didn't go away and answered with six straight points over the next three minutes before eventually knotting the score at 63-63 with 2:56 to go in the game.
The teams traded buckets over the next four possessions before Simas Lukosius gave Butler a two-point lead only to see Javon Freeman-Liberty knock down two free throws with 35 seconds left to tie the score again.
On Butler's next possession and with the shot clock expiring, Lukosius banked in a three-pointer that gave the Bulldogs the lead for good with six seconds remaining. The teams exchanged free throws in the final seconds and the score settled at 73-71 in favor of Butler.
Jones added four rebounds and four assists to his 17 points while Nick Ongenda added 14 points and five boards. Freeman-Liberty returned to the lineup and scored 13 points with four rebounds and three assists. Terry totaled 11 points, six boards and four assists and Brandon Johnson just missed a double-double with 10 points and nine rebounds.
Lukosius led Butler with 19 points and Chuck Harris added 18 points.
