Blue Demons head to Corpus Christi for H-E-B Tournament of Champions
CHICAGO – Traditionally, coach Matt Brothers brings his tennis players to Texas for their first opportunity to play outdoors while facing top-flight competition.
The H-E-B Tournament of Champions is played in Corpus Christi where temperatures are typically in the upper 70s or low 80s this time of year. Brothers believes playing outside in warm weather is excellent prep for the BIG EAST tournament in Cayce, S.C.
Even though the thermometer will only reach the low 60s this weekend, the Blue Demons (4-2) will face strong competition from primarily warm-weather schools who play outdoors much of the calendar year.
Friday at high noon, the "Band of Brothers will open HEB play against the Troy Trojans from Alabama who are off to a 6-3 start in the dual-match season.
The Trojans have beaten West Alabama, Alabama State, Binghamton, Augusta and Auburn Montgomery twice while losing to Miami, Florida Gulf Coast and UNC Wilmington.
A win sets up a semifinal showdown with the winner of the Texas San Antonio-New Mexico State match.
No. 1 singles player Vito Tonejc (14-6) will lead the Blue Demons in their toughest assignment of the dual season so far. The reigning BIG EAST Player of the Year is 6-0 in dual matches and has won his last six in a row.
Nationally ranked Marino Jakic brings a four-match winning streak to the Lone Star State and is a sparkling 5-1 in dual play.
Fellow freshman Matteo Iaquinto is 4-1 in dual matches and 14-5 overall. Tripp Tuff is a steady presence in the lineup with a 10-6 singles record including 3-2 in the dual season. Lars Peder Minsaas is 8-4 overall.
Jakic and Tonejc have formed a formidable doubles team with a six-match winning streak. They are 9-1 in their last 10 contests and 11-4 on the season.
