Taking on New Mexico State in consolation round Friday evening
CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – The first outdoor match of the dual season was a new experience for the Blue Demons on Friday.
Playing against teams who have been competing outside for quite a while is tough as DePaul discovered in a 4-0 setback to Troy from in both teams' H-E-B Tournament of Champions debut. The Alabama team improved to 7-3.
The Blue Demons (4-3) lost the doubles point despite the No. 1 team of Vito Tonejc and Marino Jakic defeating Troy's Vito Llinares and Noah Martens 6-3.
Coach Matt Brothers' team could not make up the early deficit in the singles round, dropping three consecutive matches.
"The guys played well for our first outdoor match and came up short," Brothers said. "After winning at No. 1 doubles, we let the doubles point slip through our fingers.
"Our guys played better as the matches went on, so that's a good sign of better things to come."
DePaul went against New Mexico State in the consolation round this evening. New Mexico State fell to Texas-San Antonio 5-0 in its tournament opener.
