Blue Demons edged 4-3 by New Mexico State at H-E-B Tournament of Champions
CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – Coach Matt Brothers and his team came so close to pulling off an inspiring comeback Friday night at the H-E-B Tournament of Champions.
The Blue Demons fell just short in a 4-3 loss to New Mexico State. They will face host Texas A&M-Corpus Christi at noon Saturday in the seventh-place match.
DePaul (4-4) fell behind 1-0 when the Aggies captured the doubles point.
The deficit grew to 3-1 when Vito Tonejc fires up his teammates with a dramatic 3-6, 6-2, 7-5 victory over Louis Menard at No. 1 singles after overcoming four match points.
That never-say-die comeback along with Marino Jakic's 6-3, 4-6, 6-3 win over Corey Clarke at No. 2 and Leon Huck's clutch 6-4, 7-5 decision over Luca Fe D'ostiaini evened the score at 3-3.
That's when the rally ended as New Mexico State (3-7) claimed the win after prevailing at No. 3 singles.
"What a crazy match," Brothers said. "We're down 3-1 and fought back to 3-3. Vito goes down four match points and brings it back for a huge win. We were ahead 5-2 in the third set of the final match but couldn't finish.
"It was a little frustrating, but the guys played better. We have transitioned well to outdoor tennis."
