
Second-Half Comeback Not Quite Enough at Seton Hall

Blue Demons trailed by as many as 12 points before taking lead in second half
NEWARK, N.J. – Trailing by 12 in the first half, DePaul stormed back in the second half behind Javon Freeman-Liberty, but came up short in a 66-64 loss at Seton Hall. Freeman-Liberty scored 20 of his 22 points in the second half and Courvoisier McCauley tallied his first double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds.
The Blue Demons started the night by missing their first 11 shots, but DePaul stayed in the game with stingy defense. A three-point play by McCauley pulled the Blue Demons to within a point at 6-5 with 13:23 left in the first half.
Seton Hall built a 12-point lead with just under nine minutes left in the half before the Blue Demons scored 14 of the game's next 20 points. Two free throws by Brandon Johnson made the score 23-19 in favor of the home team with just over three minutes until intermission. Johnson tallied 15 points and eight rebounds for DePaul.
The Pirates closed the half on a 7-2 run and took a 30-21 lead into the locker rooms.
DePaul (12-14, 3-13 BIG EAST) pulled to within five points twice early in the second half only to see Seton Hall pull away each time.
Freeman-Liberty heated up and scored 12 straights points for DePaul and his three-pointer at the 11-minute mark pulled the Blue Demons to within a point at 40-39.
The two sides traded scores over the next five minutes, but the Blue Demons couldn't gain the lead until a pair of free throws by Nick Ongenda put DePaul ahead for the first time at 53-52 with 6:04 on the clock.
Ongenda's free throws were in the midst of a 9-0 run for the Blue Demons that saw the lead hit 57-52 before the Pirates scored five straight to even things up with just over four minutes left.
Neither team led by more than two points over the final 4:49 and the lead changed sides five times.
McCauley put DePaul ahead on a driving lay-in with 40 seconds left and Seton Hall answered on the other end to regain the advantage. Freeman-Liberty's three-pointer went off the rim with nine seconds left forcing DePaul to foul. On the ensuing free throws, Seton Hall's Jamir Harris missed the first and made the second.
The final possession saw Freeman-Liberty drive to the basket, but his bid for the winner went off the rim and Seton Hall secured the rebound for the 66-64 final.
Freeman-Liberty added six rebounds, four assists and three steals to his game-high 22 points.
Jared Rhoden led Seton Hall (16-9, 7-8 BIG EAST) with 18 points and 18 rebounds.
