DePaul holds off Georgetown in 68-65 win at Georgetown on Thursday
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Javon Freeman-Liberty scored 25 points and the DePaul defense held off Georgetown's bid to tie the score on its final possession that led to a 68-65 win on Thursday night. The Blue Demons trailed by five midway through the second half before regaining the lead for the road victory.
DePaul (13-14, 4-13 BIG EAST) took an 11-5 lead five minutes into the evening following a three-pointer by Freeman-Liberty. The Blue Demons wouldn't connect on their next field goal for seven minutes, but maintained the advantage with six free throws during the stretch. A three-pointer by Jalen Terry followed a pair of free throws by Nick Ongenda and made the score 20-16 at the eight-minute mark.
Those five points kick started a 12-point run for DePaul the forced a Georgetown time out with the Blue Demons leading, 27-16, with 6:05 until halftime.
Georgetown scored the first five points of the second half to take its first lead at 31-30 shortly after intermission. The Hoyas built a five-point advantage midway through the period before DePaul put together a 16-5 run and to regain the advantage. Brandon Johnson buried a three-pointer from the right corner that gave the Blue Demons a 61-55 lead with 4:42 left in the game.
The Hoyas didn't go away as they scored six straight points and then beat the shot clock with a long three-pointer to take a 64-63 lead with just over two minutes left in the second half.
Both teams made free throws on consecutive possessions before the Blue Demons forced a miss and Freeman-Liberty was fouled. He nailed both free throws with 30 seconds left and his second conversion made the score 68-65.
On Georgetown's final possession, the Hoyas missed three three-point attempts as the scrambling DePaul defense held steady and secured the three-point victory.
Freeman-Liberty added seven rebounds, three assists and two steals to his game-high 25 points. Johnson grabbed 10 rebounds while Ongenda and Yor Anei each scored 11 points. Anei pulled down seven boards and finished with five steals.
Georgetown (6-21, 0-16 BIG EAST) was led by 18 points and nine rebounds from Aminu Mohammed.
The Blue Demons return to Wintrust Arena for a two-game homestand starting Sunday against St. John's. DePaul faces the Red Storm at 4 p.m. on Sunday before Marquette visits on Wednesday night in the final home game of the regular season.
