One for the Thumb: Morrow Wins Fifth National Freshman of Week Award

Latest USBWA honor surpasses four by UConn's Paige Bueckers, Iowa's Caitlin Clark last year
CHICAGO – It's been an avalanche of accolades for Aneesah Morrow over a 24-hour period.
On Monday morning, DePaul's All-American candidate won her unprecedented 13th BIG EAST Freshman of the Week award. All told, she broke 11 BIG EAST records in conference-only games.
All of this in just one 20-game league season.
Later that day, the Naismith Defensive Player of the Year committee announced that the 6-foot, 1-inch power forward from the South Side made the cut as one of 10 finalists for that coveted national prize.
Tuesday brings yet another accolade---and what else---another record.
Morrow was selected as the U.S. Basketball Writers Association (USBWA) National Freshman of the Week for an unparalleled fifth time.
One for the thumb.
The previous standard of four was set last season by Connecticut's all-world playmaker Paige Bueckers and Iowa's Caitlin Clark who currently leads the nation in scoring at 27.5 points a game.
Morrow earned her third-straight USBWA rookie honor after scoring a career-high 41 points and powering down 18 rebounds in a 90-84 victory Sunday at Creighton.
She was two points shy of the BIG EAST all-time scoring record of 43 held by Creighton's Jaylyn Agnew and Louisville's Angel McCoughtry. Morrow is now tied for the second-highest mark in DePaul history behind only Beth Hasenmiller's 42 points in 1991.
For the week, the former Simeon All-Stater averaged 28.5 points and 16.5 rebounds while shooting 55.3 percent. She has 23 consecutive double-doubles and an NCAA-leading 26 on the season.
The soft-spoken Blue Demon is one of only four players in NCAA women's basketball history to string together 20 or more consecutive double-doubles.
Morrow enters the week leading the nation in field goals, rebounds, rebounds per game, offensive rebounds per game and double-doubles. She is third in total points and fifth in steals for a team that is No. 1 in the country in points and assists.
Morrow and her teammates are totally focused on their next assignment, a BIG EAST quarterfinal showdown on Saturday against Marquette at Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Conn.
