North Carolina road trip begins Friday at Davidson and concludes Saturday in Charlotte
CHICAGO – Coach Matt Brothers and his DePaul men's tennis team are headed to North Carolina this weekend where they will face Davidson on Friday and Charlotte on Saturday.
During Michael Jordan's rookie year as the Bulls were about to get off a plane for an exhibition game in Chapel Hill, the former Tar Heel and eventual NBA legend announced to the team:
"Gentlemen, wipe your shoes before you step outside. You're about to enter God's country."
There was no such pronouncement for the "Band of Brothers," but the Blue Demons (5-5) will encounter some rugged completion in their quest to be in peak condition for next month's BIG EAST Championship in Cayce, S.C.
After their first experience playing outdoors two last weeks ago at H-E-B Tournament of Champions in Corpus Christi, Texas, they will again compete under blue skies and sunshine.
Leading the way is BIG EAST Male Tennis Singles Player of the Week Vito Tonejc who is off to a blazing start in the dual-match season winning nine in a row at the No. 1 position.
His doubles partner Marino Jakic is 7-3 so far going head-to-head mostly at No. 2 singles. Leon Huck and Matteo Iaquinto are both 5-3.
Davidson is 3-4 with wins over Gardner-Webb, Wingate and Presbyterian and losses to ITA No. 10-ranked Wake Forest, Virginia Tech, Presbyterian and UNC Greensboro.
Charlotte is ranked No. 49 in the ITA Top 75 national poll and is off to a 5-4 start. The 49ers defeated Clemson, Coastal Carolina, Radford, Presbyterian and Gardner-Webb while falling to No. 2 Tennessee, No. 10 Wake Forest, No. 12 South Carolina and No. 17 Columbia.
