Despite Vito Tonejc's 10th-straight singles win, DePaul falls 4-3 at Davidson Friday
DAVIDSON, N.C. – The red-hot Vito Tonejc won his 10th consecutive singles match, but it wasn't enough to lift DePaul past Davidson Friday in a 4-3 setback to Steph Curry's alma mater.
Tonejc is one of two Blue Demons on quite a roll along with All-American candidate Aneesah Morrow who has 23 consecutive double-doubles---tops in all of NCAA women's basketball.
The No. 1 singles standout from Zagreb, Croatia gave the Blue Demons a 2-1 lead early in the match with a decisive 6-4, 6-0 straight-setter over Alejandro Solares.
That followed a fast start for coach Matt Brothers' team as Marino Jakic and Tonejc at No. 1 doubles and Luuk Wassenaar and Lars Peder Minsaas at No. 2 racked up a pair of 6-3 wins to claim the doubles point.
But Davidson (4-4) held serve on its home court with victories at No. 3, 4, 5 and 6 singles.
Marino Jakic came through in the final match with a 3-6, 6-3, 6-3 decision over Maxwell Kachkarov at No. 2. The freshman from Split, Croatia---hometown of former Bulls star Toni Kukoc---improved to 8-4 in the dual-match season and 13-10 overall.
Tonejc's eye-popping run leaves him with a 10-0 record in the dual season and 18-6 overall. It's reminiscent of former Blue Demon women's standout and current assistant coach Aspasia Avgeri winning 11 in a row last year.
Next up for DePaul (5-6) is a showdown against ITA nationally ranked No. 49 Charlotte on Saturday.
