Men's and women's teams both play Creighton Saturday at XS Tennis Village
CHICAGO – Home, sweet home---Chicago.
At long last, coach Matt Brothers and his team will get a taste of some home cooking as the Blue Demons host Creighton Saturday in their first match at XS Tennis Village since a 6-1 BIG EAST victory over Georgetown back on Feb. 26.
Quick check of the calendar---that's 34 days since their last home match on the South Side.
Their 1:15 match Saturday is the opener of a DePaul vs. Creighton doubleheader as coach Marisa Arce and the women's team tackle the Bluejays at 3:45 p.m.
The very next day, Brothers & Co. are back at XS Tennis with a BIG EAST showdown against rival Marquette.
The Blue Demons (6-10) are shooting for a strong finish to the regular season in their final five matches leading into the BIG EAST Championships April 22-24 in Cayce, S.C.
A BIG EAST sweep would be the ideal way of igniting a finishing kick.
No. 1 singles star Vito Tonejc has rocketed to a 13-2 record in the dual season with one of those losses coming to a nationally ranked opponent.
The talented junior from Zagreb, Croatia is a sparkling 21-8 overall and has teamed with freshman standout Marino Jakic to go 10-5 in duals and 15-9 overall at No. 1 doubles.
Jakic is 9-7 in the dual season and Leon Huck is 6-5. Matteo Iaquinto has an impressive overall mark of 16-11 in his freshman season.
Creighton (6-6) has reversed a slow start, winning five of its last seven matches including victories over Butler and UIC. The Bluejays lost to a powerhouse Baylor team that was ranked second in the country when they met and also fallen to Nebraska and Xavier.
Marquette has lost 10 of its last 12 matches and it 4-12 in the dual season.
