Men's Tennis tops Creighton 6-1 after women's team beats Bluejays on Saturday
CHICAGO – On a day when Blue Demons and Bluejays met in a women's and men's tennis doubleheader, it was the Chicago shade of Blue that carried the day.
After coach Marisa Arce's team took down Creighton 5-2 Saturday at XS Tennis Village, coach Matt Brothers and his players sent the Creighton men's team home singing the blues after a 6-1 victory to complete the South Side sweep.
DePaul (7-11) jumped out to a 1-0 lead after Lars Peder Minsaas and Luuk Wassenaar topped Jose Oscar Ruiz and Stratton Brown 6-3 at No. 2 doubles before Vito Tonejc and Marino Jakic at No. 1 clinched the doubles point with a 6-3 decision over Casey Ross and Matthew Lanahan.
Leon Huck added to the fast start with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Diaz at No. 3 singles.
Creighton (6-8) won at No. 4 singles to draw within 2-1.
The Bluejays would get no closer as the "Band of Brothers" swept the next four singles showdowns.
Matteo Iaquinto upped the lead to 3-1 after a 6-1, 6-4 win over Ethan Neil at No. 6. The match clincher came courtesy of No. 1 standout Vito Tonejc with a dominant 6-2, 6-2 victory over Ross.
That gave Tonejc a sparkling 15-2 record in dual-match play and 23-8 overall.
Wassenaar recorded a 3-6, 6-3, 6-2 comeback win over Lanahan at No. 5 singles and Jakic finished it off with a 7-6(2), 7-6(5) decision over Brown at No. 2.
The Blue Demons are right back at XS Tennis on Sunday for a BIG EAST matchup against longtime rival Marquette.
