Blue Demons take on Xavier on Senior Day Saturday at XS Tennis
CHICAGO – There's nothing like starting off your week against a nationally ranked opponent.
That's the challenge for DePaul men's tennis on its short road trip Wednesday to take on No. 29 Notre Dame.
The Blue Demons conclude the 2021-22 regular season on Saturday as the second half of a DePaul-Xavier tennis doubleheader. The women's teams open up at 11:15 a.m. at XS Tennis Village with the men following at 3:30 p.m.
Both DePaul tennis teams will be celebrating Senior Day at XS Tennis.
Leading the Blue Demons into Fighting Irish country Wednesday is No. 1 singles player Vito Tonejc, the reigning BIG EAST Player of the Year.
The standout from Zagreb, Croatia has won four in a row while putting together an impressive 17-2 record in the dual-match season. He is 4-0 against BIG EAST opponents and 25-8 overall this season.
Graduate student Luuk Wassenaar (13-10 overall) has won five in a row and is 4-0 in BIG EAST play. Grad student Tripp Tuff (15-13) is 3-0 in conference.
Tonejc, Wassenaar and Tuff will be honored on Senior Day.
Notre Dame is 15-11 with 10 losses coming to Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) nationally ranked teams including No. 2 Ohio State, No. 6 Michigan, No. 7 Wake Forest, No. 8 Virginia, No. 17 North Carolina, N. 19 Duke and N. 21 North Carolina State.
Xavier is 11-6 and 3-0 in BIG EAST matches beating Butler 4-3, Villanova 6-1 and Creighton 5-2. The Musketeers are 8-0 at home but only 1-6 in road matches and 2-0 on neutral courts.
