Wassenaar and Iaquinto score for DePaul in 5-2 setback Wednesday
SOUTH BEND, Ind. – Coach Matt Brothers booked a late-season match against one of the top NCAA tennis teams in the country in preparation for the BIG EAST Championships in nine days.
DePaul battled No. 34 Notre Dame on Wednesday, coming up short 5-2 in a Midwest showdown that Brothers said: "We had our chances."
It's more than likely none of the teams the "Band of Brothers" will face next week in Cayce, S.C. will be as formidable as the Fighting Irish (16-11) who have played 10 nationally ranked teams this season.
DePaul (9-12) lost the doubles point to trail 1-0. The Irish won the first four singles matches to clinch the team result.
Reliable Luuk Wassenaar put his team on the board with a 6-2, 6-7, 1-0 (14-12) victory over Jean-Marc Malkowski at No. 4 singles. Wassenaar improved to 10-7 in dual matches and 14-10 overall
Matteo Iaquinto followed up with a 6-2, 3-6, 6-2 win over Braeden Ho at No. 6 singles. Iaquinto is now 10-8 in the dual season and 20-12 overall.
He becomes the second member of the 20-win club in 2021-22 joining No. 1 singles standout Vito Tonejc who is 17-3 in duals and 25-9 overall.
The Blue Demons' regular-season finale is Saturday as the second half of a DePaul-Xavier tennis doubleheader with the women's teams squaring off at 11:15 followed by the men at 3:30 p.m. Both teams will celebrate Senior Day at XS Tennis Village.
