Hristina Djokic, Marija Jovicic, Alina Kuzmenkova honored on Senior Day

CHICAGO – If defending BIG EAST champion Xavier is the measuring stick, DePaul could very well contend for a crown next week.

The Blue Demons stayed right with the visiting team from Cincinnati on Saturday in a 4-3 setback at XS Tennis Village that concludes their regular season.

DePaul was 4-3 against conference opponents and is 7-8 overall.

DePaul started out strong with a nice comeback in doubles. Xavier won at the No. 3 position, but Yuliya Kizelbasheva and Lenka Antonijevic tied it up with a 6-2 victory over Kyle Ahmeir and Emily Thomas at No. 1.

With the doubles point on the line, Hristina Djokic and Marija Jovicic were all clutch in a 6-4 decision over Anna Roggenburk and Imani Graham.

The 1-0 lead lasted until the Musketeers claimed a 3-1 lead by winning No. 4, No. 3 and No. 5 singles.

Kizelbasheva did her best to ignite a comeback, splitting the first two sets against Xavier's No. 1 Ahmeir. But the third and match-deciding set went to the visitor in a razor-thin 6-3, 3-6, 7-6 (7-2) tiebreaker.

Djokic scored her team's second point courtesy of a 6-4, 3-6, 6-4 win over Blessing Nwaozuzu at No. 6 singles.

Jovicic was tough at No. 2 singles with a 7-6 (9-7), 6-4 straight-set sweep of Graham.

Jovicic joined Djokic and Alina Kuzmenkova in a special Senior Day ceremony after the match.

Next up, the Blue Demons will head to Cayce, S.C. for the BIG EAST Championships that begin on Thursday. Coach Marisa Arce's team was the BIG EAST runner-up last year.
