Blue Demons and No. 20 Bulldogs tie at 1
CHICAGO -Â DePaul men's soccer (2-1-3) fought to their first draw in BIG EAST play against No. 20 Butler (3-2-1) in a Saturday night matchup at the Sellick Bowl in Indianapolis, Ind. The Blue Demons have yet to lose a game to a top-25 ranked team this season.
"Our guys executed very well tonight and should be proud of their performance," said head coach Mark Plotkin. "I know they'll be disappointed in not coming out with three points, but we have to keep the bigger picture in mind that a point on the road is a solid result and will propel us forward from here."
DePaul was able to find the back of the net first. Michael Anderson notched a goal off of Omar Ramadan's corner kick in the 18th minute. The score was Anderson's first of the 2022 season and the second of his career.Â
Gandhi Cruz was able to earn a save in the 36th minute, and the Blue Demons held the 1-0 lead at halftime.Â
Despite having many promising looks during the later half, DePaul was unable to score for a second time during the matchup. Ramadan, Cade Hagan and Jack Richards all had strong looks, but could not connect.
Butler's Jack Streberger finally broke through the Blue Demon's defense and scored the equalizer in the 85th minute.
The last few minutes of the matchup consisted of back-and-forth between the Blue Demons and the Bulldogs, but neither were able to secure a winning goal.Â
Despite the Bulldogs lone goal, the DePaul defense had a strong showing tonight. The back line was able to redirect the majority of the 14 shots that the Blue Demons faced, keeping the match close and eventually ending in a draw.Â
UP NEXT: The Blue Demons will return to the Windy City to take on UIC on Tuesday, Sept. 20. First touch is scheduled for 7 p.m. CT.
