The Blue Demons thrive at the Sean Earl Lakefront
CHICAGO – On Friday, DePaul cross country competed in the Sean Earl Lakefront Invitational hosted by Loyola. Olivia Borowiak took first place in the women's 6k with a 20:52.95 time. Shane Knanishu led the men's 8k with a 24:45.71 time. The women's team placed fifth out of eleven, while the men finished third.Â
The participating teams could not have asked for a better race day. The bright green course was accompanied by sunny, 62-degree weather and a beautiful lakefront.  Â
The Blue Demons kicked off the meet at 1 p.m.CTÂ with the women's 6k. Borowiak immediately took the lead following the shotgun start. The Yorkvill, Ill. native continued to increase her distance with the trailing runners along the course. Borowiak ran hard until she found victory at the end of the race. Borowiak also made history, becoming the second woman in DePaul history to win the Lakefront Invitational following only Leah Rygh who won on Oct. 2, 2004.Â
When asked about Borowiak's win, head coach Geoff Wayton said, "She felt good, went out, and my goodness at one point had a football field size lead. From a pure performance standpoint, probably the best cross country race of her career today and it was so nice to do it in front of our whole team."Â
Following Borowiak, Nina Amicon was the second Blue Demon to cross the finish line, ending with a 21:49.4 race. Meghan Dieball and Madison Volz followed suit, finishing with 22:58.48 and 22:59.07 times. Alexa Havon, Meaghan Andrews, and Violet Harper completed the course within the top 60.Â
The men's team competed in an 8K race where the team found great success. All of the participants finished in the top-45. Shane Knanishu held the lead for a bit during the race and finished in sixth place.Â
Knanishu's sixth place finish is the highest finish for a member of the DePaul men's team in the last few outings of the Loyola Lakefront Invitational. Dominic Bruce, Damian Rodriguez, Gavin Glaza and Griffin Lehnhardt rounded out the top five finishers for DePaul.
DePaul had four runners participate in the men's Gold 8K. Tommy Elwood led the way for the Blue Demons in the gold men's race, finishing second overall with a time of 25:45.38. William Previdi followed closely behind for a fourth place finish. Lucas Orwig and Jackson Thomas rounded out the final competitors for the Blue Demons at the race, all finishing within the top-25.Â
