Blue Demons set for second-straight top-25 opponent
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The DePaul men's basketball team hits the road for its second-straight ranked opponent as the Blue Demons get ready to face off against No. 22/20 Providence Saturday afternoon. DePaul (9-10, 3-5 BIG EAST) is set for a 1 p.m. C.T. tip off against the Friars (14-5, 6-2 BIG EAST) on FS1. John Fanta and Donny Marshall will have the call with Zach Zaidman and Dave Corzine on the radio call on WSTR The Score.
SCOUTING DEPAUL
DePaul is coming off its best win of the season where the Blue Demons took down No. 8 Xavier in a thrilling 73-72 win at home Wednesday evening. Xavier was previously unbeaten in the BIG EAST and DePaul snapped an 11-game win streak for the Musketeers.
Umoja Gibson led DePaul with a game-high 22 points in addition to five assists, three rebounds and two steals. Javan Johnson and Da'Sean Nelson rounded out the trio of double-digit scorers for DePaul. Nelson is averaging 16.0 points and six rebounds per game across his last five, a stretch that began with 17 points against Providence on Jan. 1. DePaul also saw Caleb Murphy makes his Blue Demon debut, after being sideline with injury for the first 18 games of the season.
THE SERIES
Providence leads the all-time series 37-13, including the earlier meeting between the two programs this season. Providence won that game 74-59 despite it being closely contested for a majority of the contest.
The last two meetings in Providence between the two programs have both gone to overtime, including last season's 76-73 OT win for the Friars. DePaul's last win against Providence came in the 2021 BIG EAST Tournament, 70-62. The Blue Demons have not won on the road against the Friars since 2018.
SCOUTING PROVIDENCE
Providence enters Saturday's game coming off back-to-back BIG EAST losses, after opening conference play 6-0. The Friars have been without starting point guard Jared Bynum who ranks ninth in the BIG EAST with 4.4 assists per game.
Bryce Hopkins leads Providence in both scoring and rebounding, averaging 16.4 points and 9.2 boards per game. As a team, the Friars rank fourth nationally in free throws made per game and second in rebound margin (9.2).
