Blue Demons can't overcome 18-point fourth quarter deficit
CHICAGO – A late fourth-quarter rally fell just short as DePaul dropped an 81-72 decision to St. John's on Saturday afternoon at Wintrust Arena. The Blue Demons held a three-point edge at halftime, but a big third quarter was the difference as the Red Storm outscored the Blue Demons 25-13 in that span.
Aneesah Morrow led all scorers with 26 points and 11 rebounds for her 16th double-double of the season and 43rd of her career. Darrione Rogers added 16 points and eight rebounds while Anaya Peoples chipped in 14 points and while grabbing five boards of her own..
The Blue Demons scored 16 points off 14 Johnnies turnovers while holding the edge in the paint 38-26.
DePaul (11-9, 4-5 BIG EAST) jumped out to a quick and efficient start, growing a 15-6 lead on a Morrow three-point field goal at the top of the key. The Red Storm picked up the pace and cut the lead to five after the first 10 minutes, with DePaul in front 20-15.
St. John's (16-3, 7-3) claimed their first lead of the game, 22-21, with back-to-back threes from Jayla Everett to begin the second stanza. Morrow netted 11 second-quarter points and shot 50-percent from the field during the period to lift the Blue Demons to a 39-36 lead heading into the locker room.
The third quarter saw the Blue Demons come within one, 47-46, on a Morrow layup midway through the period before the Red Storm closed the quarter on a 14-6 run to take a 61-52 lead into the final 10 minutes of play.
After St. John's expanded pushed their advantage to 70-52 in the early stages of the fourth quarter, the Blue Demons held the Red Storm without a field goal for the final six and a half minutes of the contest while working to trim down the deficit. A Peoples bucket off a Red Storm miscue cut the lead to nine, 74-65, with three minutes remaining and later a pair of Morrow free throws brought the Blue Demons within seven, but the visitors would make 7-of-10 free throw attempts down the stretch to keep the game out of reach.
Everett led St. John's with 24 points while Unique Drake tallied 19 of her own.
