Blue Demons can't overcome slow start in 72-63 setback to Golden Eagles
CHICAGO – DePaul fell behind early and could not claw their way back in a 72-63 setback to longtime foe Marquette on Wednesday night at Wintrust Arena. The Blue Demons trimmed what was once a 16-point deficit to seven heading into the fourth quarter but couldn't complete the comeback to fall to 10-6 on the season and 3-2 in BIG EAST play.
Aneesah Morrow finished with 24 points and 15 rebounds to lead the way for the Blue Demons. Morrow notched her 12th double-double on the season and 39th in her career.
Anaya Peoples added 14 points, eight of which came in the fourth quarter while Darrione Rogers and Kendall Holmes tallied nine points apiece. Jorie Allen grabbed 10 rebounds and netted six points.
DePaul held a slight 41-40 edge on the glass.
The Golden Eagles took a 14-6 lead halfway through the first quarter after outrebounding the Blue Demons 10-2 in the first five minutes. DePaul would trail 26-16 after 10 minutes.
Marquette (10-5, 3-3 BIG EAST) grew their lead to 16 midway through the second quarter, but the Blue Demons strung together a couple stops and cut the deficit to 10, 42-32, on a Holmes runner through the lane. The Golden Eagles took a 46-32 halftime lead behind 51 percent shooting the field. Morrow had 13 points in the first half to pace the Blue Demons.
The third quarter saw the Blue Demons hold the Golden Eagles scoreless for a four and a half minute stretch while going on a 10-2 run to come within seven, 54-47, heading into the final quarter.
Marquette scored 10 unanswered to open up the fourth quarter and jump back in front by 17 with six minutes remaining. Peoples splashed a three to cut the deficit back to nine, but the Golden Eagles went on to claim the victory.
Jordan King led Marquette with 23 points and nine assists.
