Peoples paces Blue Demons with 18 points
CHICAGO — DePaul ran into a sharp-shooting Michigan State team on Thursday night, dropping a 102-64 decision at Wintrust Arena. The Blue Demons were stymied to a season low in points while the Spartans shot 60-percent from the field and knocked in 14 three-point field goals.
Graduate guard Anaya Peoples led DePaul with 18 points for her eighth double-figure scoring performance of the season while Kate Clarke added 15 and Jorie Allen chipped in 12 points and seven rebounds.
Michigan State (6-1) saw five finish in double figures led by Moira Joiner's 26 points.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Michigan State won the tipoff and were the first on the board, grabbing an early lead. DePaul quickly bounced back with triples from Peoples and Clarke to bring the Blue Demons within a point, trailing 11-10. Both teams traded baskets before Michigan State went on a 7-0 run to close the quarter and take a 29-24 advantage after the first 10 minutes. The Spartans hit six first-quarter threes.
DePaul (4-4) fell into a five-minute scoring drought in the second quarter with Michigan State putting together a 12-0 run. Peoples broke through with a second-chance layup as the clock ticked down to just under two minutes remaining in the half. The Blue Demons trailed 46-32 headed into the locker room.
Peoples had nine first-half points while Clarke had eight to lead the Blue Demons.
The Spartans opened the third quarter with much of the same from the second, scoring 13 unanswered points. Peoples put a stop to the Spartans spurt once again with a personal 6-0 run, narrowing Michigan State's lead to 21. The visitors took a 73-48 lead into the fourth quarter.
Looking for a rally, the Blue Demons started off the final period with six unanswered points, but wouldn't get much further as Michigan State sealed the victory.
