DePaul Powers Past Western Michigan, 77-53, on Opening Night

Anaya Peoples leads the way with 20 points and 13 rebounds
CHICAGO—DePaul strung together a 25-2 run between the second and third quarters to power past Western Michigan 77-53 on Monday night at Wintrust Arena.
The Blue Demons kicked off the 2023-24 season with a balanced scoring attack as four players finished in double figures led by 20 points from Anaya Peoples to go along with 13 rebounds. The performance was the seventh career double-double for the Danville, Ill. native.
Graduate transfer Michelle Sidor matched her career-high with 16 points including a pair of triples while Jorie Allen poured in 15 behind six-for-eight shooting from the field. Sophomore Kate Clarke rounded out the quartet with 13 points.
DePaul (1-0) dominated the battle on the glass, outrebounding the Broncos 45-23 while also holding a 42-18 edge in paint points.
All 12 active players logged minutes for head coach Doug Bruno with five freshmen making their collegiate debuts including Grace Carstensen, Charlece Ohiaeri, Sumer Lee, Haley Walker and Shakara McCline.
How it Happened
The teams traded baskets in the early stages of the first quarter, before the Blue Demons used a mini 9-0 run to jump in front 14-7. After 10 minutes, DePaul held a 16-11 edge with Allen pacing the offense with seven early points.
Western Michigan responded with an 8-0 run of their own to take a four-point lead midway through the second quarter. DePaul retaliated once again, this time embarking on a 14-0 run to end the half. The stretch saw Peoples pour in eight of her 20 points as the Blue Demons took a 32-22 lead into the locker room.
DePaul turned up the defensive pressure and ran in transition in the third quarter, putting together a 13-2 spurt to open the second half. The lead was pushed to 59-36 heading into the final 10 minutes.
A fast break layup from Clarke with six minutes gone in the fourth ballooned DePaul's lead to 28 points as the Blue Demons went on to close out the victory. The offense shot a blistering 77-percent (7-for-9) from the field in the final quarter.
