Blue Demons used balanced scoring to race past Wildcats
CHICAGO – Behind a 23-2 second-quarter run, DePaul dismantled Northwestern 90-65 on Wednesday night at Wintrust Arena. Anaya Peoples netted a game-high 21 points to lead a balanced scoring effort which saw six Blue Demons finish with seven or more points on the night. In the end, 10 Blue Demons entered the scorebook while the unit dished out 27 assists, their second-highest output of the season, on 36 made field goals.
Peoples earned her seventh 20-point performance of the season and added to her tally of 18 or more points in all 11 games while adding seven assists, seven steals and four steals.
Guards Michelle Sidor and Katlyn Gilbert recorded 15 points apiece with Sidor going 5-6 from behind the arc, hitting her first five attempts while also grabbing three rebounds and two assists. Gilbert displayed her all-around game once again with six boards, five steals and four assists. Jorie Allen netted nine points on 4-of-6 shooting to go with a game-high eight rebounds.
DePaul (6-5) outrebounded the Wildcats 38-32 and poured in 26 points off of 24 Northwestern turnovers.
Melannie Daley and Casey Harter recorded 13 apiece to lead the Wildcats.
How it Happened
Northwestern (3-7) won the tipoff and scored the first two points of the game before DePaul opened an 18-0 run to take control. DePaul held a 20-10 advantage after the first 10 minutes.
The Blue Demons rattled off eight points unanswered, capped by a pair of Gilbert baskets to force a Northwestern timeout with four minutes gone by in the second quarter. In all, it was a 23-2 run to give DePaul a 47-19 lead at the half.
DePaul sank four three-pointers while trading points with the Wildcats to start the third quarter, extending their lead to 31 points with a jumper from Peoples making the score 61-30. The Blue Demons held a 25-point edge heading into the fourth quarter.
Peoples and Allen combined for 11 of DePaul's 18 fourth-quarter points while freshman Grace Carstensen netted five points with the first two field goals of her career as the Blue Demons closed out a 90-65 victory.
