McErlane and Clarke combine for 46 points to lead the Blue Demons
CHICAGO – DePaul knocked down a season-high 17 three-pointers and scored 65 first-half points in a 98-69 rout of Alabama State on Sunday afternoon at Wintrust Arena. Sophomores Maeve McErlane and Kate Clarke led the scoring effort, combining for 46 points on 11 made threes.
Three different Blue Demons finished in double figures led by McErlane's 26 points on 7-of-9 shooting from deep. Clarke added 20 points of her own for her third 20-point performance on the year, while freshman guard Shakara McCline broke out for a career-high 16 points.
Charlece Ohiaeri and Anaya Peoples added eight points apiece with Peoples crashing the boards for a game-high 10 rebounds, her third double-digit rebounding effort on the year.
DePaul (7-5) outrebounded Alabama State 49-29, their second-largest margin of the season, while posting 25 assists on 35 made field goals for its sixth outing with 20 or more assists through the first 12 games of the 2023-24 campaign.
Cordasia Harris had 32 points to lead the Hornets.
How it Happened
McErlane and Michelle Sidor each netted a pair of threes to ignite a hot start as the Blue Demons jumped out to an 18-9 lead. DePaul ended the quarter on a 12-0 run capped by a pair of triples from Clarke to take a 30-13 advantage after 10 minutes.
A 9-2 run in the top half of the second quarter extended the Blue Demons lead to 43-18 before nine unanswered points from McErlane sent the two teams into the locker room with a halftime score of 65-24.
A low-scoring third quarter helped Alabama State make up some ground, but DePaul's offense wouldn't be quieted as Ohiaeri sent the Blue Demons into the fourth quarter in front 80-43.
The two sides traded blows for the last ten minutes, with McCline starting and ending DePaul's scoring summary. Despite the Hornets outscoring DePaul in the final frame, the Blue Demons kept hold of their lead to finish the showdown 98-69.
