Blue Demons partner with coaching for Literacy
CHICAGO – In the state of Illinois, nearly 38% of fourth-grade students cannot read at a basic level. Less than 33% are considered proficient. These statistics are critical. But, in partnership with Coaching for Literacy, DePaul softball hopes to change those statistics in Chicago through its Fight for Literacy Game, set for Sunday, April 2.
"DePaul Softball is proud to be a part of the Coaching for Literacy initiative," Head Softball Coach Tracie Adix-Zins said. "Our program believes in lifelong learning and the promotion of literacy is important to our greater Vincentian mission. Our Blue Demons student-athletes look forward to a great partnership with this organization." During the April 2 game against Providence, Coach Adix-Zins and her staff will wear green lapel pins and wristbands to raise awareness for literacy and call their fans to learn more.
"Fight for Literacy is truly a movement," said Jason Baker, Co-Executive Director of Coaching for Literacy. "We know how crucial it is for young kids to learn to read, and active, committed partners like DePaul University are truly helping bring a big voice to this issue by showing their support. Their influence can and will create meaningful impact in the lives of students. But anyone can fight for literacy, and this partnership really helps bring the issue front and center in the Chicago community and among Blue Demon softball fans. We hope it creates a long-term impact."
