PEORIA, ILL.--Â The DePaul cross country team opens its season with the Bradley Intercollegiate at Detweiller Park in Peoria, Ill. on Friday, Sept. 15. The men's 8k race is slated for 5:15 p.m. and the women's 3-mile race is set for 6 p.m. Last season, the women's team took first place while the men brought home second at the event.
ÂThe Blue Demon men have three key returners competing. Seniors Joe Knanishu and Damian Rodriguez earned a time of 24:27.4 and 24:29.0 respectively in the men's 8k at Bradley last season, while junior Griffin Lehnhardt posted a time of 24:29.3.Â
"We return five out of our top nine from this meet a year ago," said Coach Geoff Wayton. "The returning men have grown a lot in the last year- we have some exciting newcomers that will fill in the gaps. Last year we had a :24 gap 1-5- and I would expect the same this year. The course is flat and fast and it's a great meet to open with."
On the women's side, key returners include graduate student Olivia Borowiak, who earned first place at Bradley last year with a time of 16:24.9 in the women's 3 mile race and graduate student Nina Amicon, who earned a time of 16:38.7, taking second place. Senior Meghan Dieball posted a time of 17:41.7.Â
Â
"Olivia Borowiak and Nina Amicon went 1-2 last year to lead the women's team to first place," said Wayton. "We had too large of a gap last year- and it will be up to our returners and newcomers to keep the gap below 90 seconds. We'll continue to hold Meghan Dieball out so it will be exciting to see who will step up to take her place. I would like to see our top 7 under 18:00!"
ÂAfter the Bradley Intercollegiate, the Blue Demons compete in their backyard at the Sean Earl Lakefront Invitational hosted by Loyola Chicago on Sept. 29.Â
