PROVIDENCE, R.I. – An unrelenting Providence press proved to be too much to handle as DePaul dropped the BIG EAST match 4-0 on Friday night at Chapey Field.
The Friars scored two goals in the first half and two in the second half while outmatching the Blue Demons in shots, 14-3.
Keagan Pace, Christian Baumgartner and Marek Gonda totaled one shot apiece for DePaul while goalkeeper Gandhi Cruz made a pair of saves in net.
The seventh minute saw Gonda fire the first shot of the match on a cross from Liam Mullins on the Blue Demon counterattack.
Providence (3-4-2, 1-1-1 BIG EAST) found the back of the net in the 13th minute of action as the Friars played the corner kick short before sending a ball into the box which eventually found the head of Rodrigo Vaza.
The Friars extended their lead in the 27th minute as the Blue Demons misplayed a ball in the midfield and couldn't recover as Brendan McSorley scored from the right side of the box on a ball played from the opposite side of the field.
Headed into the locker room at halftime, DePaul trailed 2-0 while recording just one shot in the first 45 minutes of action.
DePaul (1-6-2, 0-3) saw its best chance of the night come in the 56th minute as a free kick from near the midfield line was sent into the box from Jordan Clagette finding the head of Pace before the ball was collected by the Friars' keeper.
Providence added a pair of goals in the final 10 minutes of play to put the game out of reach.
Up Next: DePaul will close out the non-conference portion of its schedule on Wed, Oct. 4 when No. 20 UIC visits Wish Field. Kick off is slated for 2 p.m.
