McCline and Peoples finish in double figures
MILWAUKEE, WIS. – A cold shooting spell did DePaul in against 23rd-ranked Marquette on Saturday night at the Al McGuire Center, falling 78-47 in the 85th meeting between the two programs. The Blue Demons were stifled offensively, shooting a season-low 26.7 percent from the field.
Freshman guard Shakara McCline led two players in double figures for DePaul with 13 points to go with four rebounds while Anaya Peoples added 10 points, six rebounds and a pair of assists. Peoples reached double figures for the 16th time this season.
Jorie Allen did a little bit of everything in 32 minutes of action with eight points, six rebounds, three assists and two steals.
DePaul (9-9, 1-4 BIG EAST) went a perfect 10-for-10 from the charity stripe, reaching 100-percent as a team for the first time since February of 2019.
Liza Karlen led Marquette with 19 points and six rebounds.
How it Happened
A 6-0 Marquette run put the Blue Demons behind 10-4 after the first five minutes of the first quarter with Michelle Sidor and Peoples providing the early scoring for the visitors. DePaul struggled to find its footing from the field, making just three field goals on 18 percent shooting with Marquette taking a 24-9 lead into the second period.
After McCline hit her second triple of the game 45 seconds into the second, the Blue Demons fell into a 4:52 scoring drought as the Golden Eagles ballooned their lead to 36-12. Six consecutive free throws brought DePaul back within 20. The teams went into halftime with Marquette in front 38-18.
Quick baskets to start the third quarter from Katlyn Gilbert and Peoples brought the deficit to 16 to trigger a Marquette timeout. The Golden Eagles rattled off a 12-2 run of their own to reclaim a sizable margin. DePaul trailed 61-33 after three quarters.
Marquette (15-2, 4-2 BIG EAST) edged the Blue Demons by three points in the fourth quarter to close out the victory and remain unbeaten at home.
