DePaul Drops Tight Match Against Creighton

The Blue Demons fall 4-3 in home opener
CHICAGO – In a back-and-forth battle featuring conference rival Creighton (4-2), DePaul (1-2) could not secure the last point needed to come out on top. The Blue Demons were held off in a photo finish Saturday evening by a score of 4-3.
DePaul opened the night with hard fought doubles draws, but ultimately dropped courts No. 2 and No. 3 to hand Creighton the doubles point.
Despite falling in doubles action, four of six Blue Demons won their first set.
Singles proved to be a different story with DePaul dominating in three straight-set victories early over the Bluejays. Leon Huck, Matteo Iaquinto, and Pablo Torres Almeida each knocked off their opponent, moving the Blue Demons ahead, 3-2.
After dropping his first set, junior Sven Moser forced a deciding third set, but eventually fell to Creighton's Yuma Daijima, 6-1, 4-6, 6-2.
With the score knotted at four, the No. 1 court matchup between Laurentiu Mandocescu and Kirtan Patel would take center stage. Mandocescu controlled the momentum, winning the first set 6-3. However, Patel quickly bounced back to steal the second set, 7-5. After more than three hours of action, the contest came to a close with Mandocescu falling 6-4 in the third set in a highly-energetic match.

DePaul travels to West Point N.Y. to take on a trio of teams in Furman, Boston College, and Army Feb. 2-4. First serve on Friday, Feb. 2 will be at 4:00 p.m. CT against Furman, at the Lichtenberg Tennis Center.
