Blue Demon duo combines for 44 points in the setback
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Katlyn Gilbert tied her career-high with 25 points while Michelle Sidor recorded a career-best 19 points, but it wasn't enough as DePaul's comeback at Providence fell short by a 72-65 margin on Wednesday afternoon.
The Blue Demons trailed by 12 at halftime and cut the deficit to four with 30 seconds remaining, but couldn't come any closer falling to 9-7 on the season and 1-2 in BIG EAST play.
Gilbert registered a season-high for the second-straight game powered by a 15-point first half to go along with seven steals, two assists and two rebounds on the game.
Sidor knocked down five triples and shot 50-percent from the field for her eighth game in double figures this season. Anaya Peoples added 14 points for her 14th game in double figures on the 2023-24 campaign while adding a trio of steals.
The Blue Demons forced 25 Providence turnovers on 15 steals for DePaul's 12th-consecutive game with double-digit takeaways.
Providence (8-7, 2-0) saw four players finish in double figures led by Olivia Olsen's 19 points.
How it Happened
Gilbert scored DePaul's first eight points of the game as the Blue Demons took an 8-5 lead into the first media timeout. The Friars used a 7-0 run of their own to take a 17-12 lead with a little over a minute remaining in the period. Gilbert splashed her second triple of the game to cut the deficit to 17-15 after 10 minutes of play.
The Blue Demons reclaimed the lead on a Sidor triple, but the Friars mounted an 8-0 run to take their largest lead, 27-20 and force a DePaul timeout. Peoples drove to the bucket for a pair of layups and Sidor connected on another three, but the Friars hot shooting from deep continued to give them a 41-29 edge at halftime.
Gilbert led all scorers at the break with 15 points to go with five steals.
Sidor's fifth three of the game trimmed the deficit down to 10 with five minutes gone by in the third before Peoples drove through the lane to bring the Blue Demons within eight 52-44. DePaul was held scoreless for the final 3:47 of the third and trailed 56-44 headed into the fourth.
Consecutive layups from Sidor and Gilbert put the Blue Demons within arm's length, 65-59, with 2:43 left in the fourth. Gilbert's basket with 30 seconds on the clock had DePaul back within four, but it would come no further as the Friars hit their free throws in the waning seconds to hold on for the victory.
Jan. 6. Tipoff from Wintrust Arena is set for 3 p.m. with coverage on FS1.
