Blue Demons begin Main Draw singles and doubles action Friday

LANSING, Mich. – DePaul men's tennis concluded its first day at the ITA Midwest Regionals with five singles victories on Thursday at the MSU Indoor Tennis Center. Freshman Tobias Leitner earned two wins, advancing to the Main Draw alongside teammate and automatic-qualifier Matteo Iaquinto.

The Round of 64 began at 8:30 a.m. CT, with Leitner securing the Blue Demons' first win of the tournament in a commanding straight-set victory over NIU's Iker Dellien, 6-2, 6-1.

Two more DePaul freshmen, Andy Hadziabdic and Quang Vinh Nguyen, took down their opponents in the opening round. Hadziabdic bested NIU's Sam Klein 6-1, 6-2, while Vinh Nguyen edged Chester Wickwire of Youngstown State in a thrilling third set, 6-2, 3-6, 6-4.

The final victory in the Round of 64 came from senior Jona Gitschel, who won a hard-fought three-set match against Caden Scarlett of Illinois State, 7-5, 1-6, 7-5.

Later in the day, the four Blue Demons competed in the Round of 32, aiming to secure their places in the Main Draw.

Leitner led the way for DePaul, earning his second straight-set singles win of the day, defeating Luis Llorens Saracho of Notre Dame 6-4, 6-4. With this win, Leitner joins senior Matteo Iaquinto in the Main Draw of singles play on Friday afternoon.
