Allen, Newman Lead Blue Demons to Exhibition Victory

Post duo combines for 35 points and 15 rebounds
CHICAGO – DePaul women's basketball earned its second-straight exhibition victory on Monday night, taking down Winona State 73-58 inside Wintrust Arena.
Graduate forward Jorie Allen tallied an impressive 25 points on 10-for-14 shooting from the field, with Meg Newman posting a near-triple double with 10 points, 10 rebounds and seven assists. In a quality performance off the bench, redshirt-sophomore Haley Walker was perfect from the field on three attempts, recording seven points, six rebounds, and three steals in twelve minutes of action.
As a team, the Blue Demons assisted on 25 of 31 made field goals, nearly 81% of its shot attempts.
DePaul dominated in the paint, 38-22, while also forcing 20 Warrior turnovers and converting their miscues into 21 points.
Olivia Gamoke led three Winona State players in double figures with 14 points.
How it Happened
After missing its first shot attempt, the Blue Demons went on to hit six-straight baskets including a pair of three-pointers by Sumer Lee and Shakara McCline. After going up 8-1, DePaul traded shots with Winona St. with the Warriors going on a run of their own hitting 5-of-6 attempts. With 40 seconds remaining in the period, DePaul snagged three offensive rebounds on one possession, coming up just short to maintain a four-point lead, 21-17, after 10 minutes of action.
Taylor Johnson-Matthews, McCline and Walker, hit early baskets in the second quarter to push the score to 27-21 in favor of the Blue Demons. Gamoke responded to DePaul's 3-for-3 start with an and-one three-pointer from the wing, scoring 11 of the Warriors' first 21 points on four-of-four shooting. The Blue Demons were held scoreless for three minutes amid Winona State's 9-0 run. DePaul exploded for a 13-2 spurt over the final five minutes of the first half, connecting on five of seven from the field with Allen scoring nine of DePaul's 13 points during the run. At the intermission, DePaul led 40-31.
Three consecutive DePaul turnovers, three scoreless minutes, and back-to-back buckets for Winona State cut the lead to five to open the third quarter. An ensuing 6-0 run for the Scarlet and Blue ballooned the lead up to 11 midway through the third quarter. Both teams traded seven consecutive baskets, holding the DePaul lead to ten. Kate Clarke broke the streak, connecting on a pivotal three-pointer to give the Blue Demons their largest lead of the night at 58-42. After hitting a free throw, the Warriors went scoreless for three minutes in a stretch where they went 0 for 5.
In the fourth, DePaul extended its lead to 20 following four-consecutive made baskets which included Walker knocking down a triple. The Blue Demons would continue their offensive spurt with a 7-0 run while holding the Warriors scoreless for over three minutes.
