DePaul Concludes Day One at Cincinnati Hidden Duals

CINCINNATI – The scarlet and blue competed in the first day of the Cincinnati Hidden Duals on Friday, Oct. 4, their second tournament in as many weekends.
Doubles play opened the day as the Blue Demons took on Marshall at 11:00 a.m. CT on the Trabert-Talbert Tennis Center courts. The deadly duo of junior Hannah Smith and senior Eleanor Nobbs claimed victory over Hurrion/McGrene, 7-5. Senior Eva Goncharov and sophomore newcomer Helin Alvarez finished with much of the same success, a 6-4 win versus the Thundering Herd's Vanderheyden/Van Hout.
The Blue Demons battled Miami (OH) in their second doubles match of the afternoon with first serve at 12:00 p.m. CT. Smith and Nobbs were once again the highlight of the contest for DePaul, dominating Slowek/Zalukar 6-1. The seasoned veterans of the women's tennis program each had tremendous performances a week ago, and they continued the trend as a pair on Friday.
The final doubles action for DePaul was against host Cincinnati following the match with the Redhawks. Only sophomore Sasha Stula and freshman Eleanor Cochran took part in competition for DePaul, earning a 6-1 triumph over Pyrz/Popovski.
Singles matches kicked off at 2:00 p.m. CT pitting the scarlet and blue against the Bearcats for the second time. In the No. 1 slot, Smith dropped set one 4-6, but battled to capture set two 7-6 (8). The split in the first two sets resulted in a tiebreaker with the English native coming out on top, 10-6. Stula made quick work of Gabrielle Guenter taking the match 6-2, 6-0 on court three.
