Cahill adds career-high 16 digs in defeat
Providence, R.I. – DePaul volleyball fell to the Providence Friars 3-1 (23-25, 25-21, 21-25, 28-30) Saturday afternoon, falling to 18-10 overall, and 10-6 in league play.
For the first time this season, outside hitter Jill Pressly led the squad on both offense and defense, totaling 21 kills and 18 digs. This marks her 14th double-double of the season, and ninth in BIG EAST matches. At the net, the Plano, Texas native poured in a match-leading six blocks.
Middle blocker Aly Kindelberger achieved double figure kills for the ninth time in 2024, tallying 11, while fellow middle blocker Meghan Scholz posted eight kills of her own. Scholz also recorded five blocks for the Blue Demons.
Defensively, freshman Abby Cahill had her standout match with a career-high 16 digs, second only to Pressly, and libero Rachel Krasowski notched ten digs on the day.
Setters Ashley Cudiamat and Amanda Saeger each contributed 22 assists, with Cudiamat registering ten digs for her 13th double-double of the year.
"Tough loss for us," said head coach Marie Zidek.
"Providence earned a lot of their own points in that match. I thought we could have adjusted faster, but their attack kept us off balance just enough to never really grab any momentum. In the end, we had opportunities to stretch that match to five sets and came up short. It is important now for us to stay together and work for more."
Providence was led by 23 kills from outside hitter Shaliyah Rhoden.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
SET ONE
The teams traded points early, with 13 combined errors. DePaul briefly pulled ahead, with two kills from Pressly and a Juncu service ace. The Friars went on a 3-0 scoring run, but the Blue Demons again went on a 4-0 run of their own, led by three more Pressly kills. Two kills and an ace narrowly closed the set, 25-23 in favor of the Friars.
SET TWO
An opening 5-0 run for the Blue Demons was propelled by two more Juncu service aces. Three DePaul errors allowed the Friars to claw their way back, tying the set at 11 points apiece. Two kills each from Sophia Adkins and Megan Weldon gave them a four-point advantage, but DePaul went on a late 4-0 run, earning the set, 25-21.
SET THREE
The squads swapped points the entire way, with three kills each from sophomore Yagmur Yavuz, Scholz, and Pressly, while Rhoden added four kills for the Friars. It wasn't until late that Providence pulled away behind three kills from three different players, taking the set, 25-21.
SET FOUR
The sides remained tight yet again, until three Pressly kills and three Providence errors extended the margin to six points for the Blue Demons. Three kills from Rhoden and two from Adkins allowed the Friars to knot the set at 21. From there, the teams went back and forth, until consecutive kills from Kayla Grant and Rhoden secured the set in extra points, 30-28 for the Friars.
