Blue Demons earn just third BIG EAST set against Bluejays
CHICAGO – DePaul volleyball fell to No. 5 Creighton 3-1 (26-24, 21-25, 13-25, 15-25) Friday evening, earning just the third set against the Bluejays in conference play this season, and first by a team other than Marquette. The Blue Demons fall to 18-11 overall, and 10-7 in conference play.
Outside hitter Jill Pressly paced the DePaul offense with 15 kills, while freshman Luisa Juncu put up eight of her own. Middle blockers Aly Kindelberger and Meghan Scholz added six kills each.
Freshman Amanda Saeger and senior Ashley Cudiamat split setting duties once again, recording 18 and 16 assists, respectively. On defense, libero Rachel Krasowski contributed 15 digs on the night.
"Incredible show of resilience and blue grit by this team," said head coach Marie Zidek.
"To step up for their fallen teammate and rely on each other shows how special this group truly is. I thought we took the match to them early, and just refused to let go. We talked about how important belief was in this match, and every single person made a play to help the team. We were able to play just over a set and a half of volleyball that was elite, taking the first BIG EAST set against Creighton by a team other than Marquette. Then, Creighton showed why they are ranked fifth in the nation. They never broke down, they refused to give any runs as they figured out their game, and we just couldn't produce enough offense. Ava Martin is an incredible player, and she went next level when her team needed her tonight. That said, I am so proud of this team and the fight they showed."
Creighton was led by 20 kills from junior Ava Martin.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
SET ONE
DePaul went on a 4-0 run at the outset, propelled by two kills from Pressly and two from Kindelberger. The teams then traded runs, including three blocks from the Bluejays and kills from four different Blue Demons. The set was close the rest of the way, and neither side could pull away, until a Scholz kill earned DePaul the set, 26-24.
SET TWO
The teams swapped points until the Bluejays registered a 5-0 scoring run to put the tally at 9-3. DePaul went on two 3-0 runs of their own to pull within one, bolstered by five Creighton errors. Four kills from Martin and two from Norah Sis pushed the Bluejays to the set win, 25-21.
SET THREE
Creighton jumped out to a quick 5-0 start and never relinquished the lead. Despite three more Pressly kills and two from Juncu, the Bluejays posted three more scoring runs throughout to take the set, 25-13.
SET FOUR
The squads were knotted at two until a 5-0 scoring run with two service aces put the Bluejays ahead, 7-2. Seven Blue Demon errors allowed Creighton to extend their lead, and they closed the final set with a Martin kill, 25-15.
