HENDERSON, Nevada – DePaul women's basketball fell 85-62 to No. 8 Oklahoma in the opening round of the 2024 Ball Dawgs Classic at Lee's Family Forum. The Blue Demons were within reach after the opening quarter but couldn't withstand a number of Sooner runs on Monday afternoon.
Â
Facing its second top-10 opponent of three in a four-game span, DePaul was led by inside tandem of Jorie Allen and Meg Newman who totaled 15 points apiece. Allen added a season-high six assists while Newman collected a team-best seven rebounds.
Â
Las Vegas native Charlece Ohiaeri posted a career-high 12 points in front of her home crowd.
Â
As a team, the Blue Demons grabbed 42 rebounds, the most by any Oklahoma opponent through six games this season. Redshirt-sophomore Haley Walker grabbed six off the bench.
Â
Oklahoma (6-0) had four players finish in double figures led by Payton Verhulst's 18 points.
Â
How it Happened
Oklahoma jumped in front 14-5 behind an early 7-0 run before Ohiaeri knocked down a triple to cut the lead to four, 21-17, with 2:15 remaining in the first. The Sooners ended the period with six unanswered points to claim a 27-17 advantage after one.
Â
DePaul (2-4) went without a field goal for nearly three minutes midway through the second quarter leaving room for Oklahoma to expand its lead to 20. Five quick points from Allen breathed life into the Blue Demons and made way for Ohiaeri to hit her third triple of the half and trim the deficit to 15. The Sooners led 48-31 at halftime.
Â
Newman netted three-consecutive baskets to start the third quarter for the Blue Demons. A jumper on the left wing from Taylor Johnson-Matthews capped an 8-0 run for DePaul to come within 14 but Oklahoma scored the final 11 points of the quarter to pull ahead by 25.
Â
The Blue Demons outscored the Sooners 15-13 in the fourth quarter behind seven points from Newman, but it would not be enough to erase the deficit.
