CHICAGO – It was a slow start that stung DePaul on Sunday afternoon in a 78-59 loss to longtime rival Marquette inside Wintrust Arena. The Blue Demons shot just 13-percent from the floor in the first quarter and could never claw back, falling to 6-9 on the season and 1-1 in BIG EAST play.Â
Â
Jorie Allen led the Blue Demons once again with 24 points, all of which game in the second half, on 55-percent shooting from the field. Allen finished in double figures for the 15th-straight game and reached 20 points for the eighth time this season.Â
Â
Taylor Johnson-Matthews tallied the first double-double of her career with 19 points and 10 rebounds in addition to a career-high six assists. The junior guard reached double-digits for the seventh-straight game.Â
Â
Junior Meg Newman rounded out the trio scoring in double figures with 10 points in addition to her eight rebounds and two steals for her first multi-steal game as a Blue Demon.Â
Â
DePaul was held to just six bench points, with Allen, Johnson-Matthews, and Newman combining for 53.
Â
Four Golden Eagles finished in double figures led by Skylar Forbes' 18 points.Â
Â
How It Happened
Marquette (9-3, 1-0 BIG EAST) opened the game hitting five of their first six field goal attempts to take an early 10-2 advantage. Johnson-Matthews put DePaul back on the board, adding six first-quarter points of her own. The Blue Demon defense held the Golden Eagles to 3-for-12 shooting to close the period trailing 18-8.
Â
Newman led the Blue Demon scoring output to begin the second period, scoring six points on a perfect 3-for-3 from the field. Four DePaul offensive rebounds kept the Marquette lead at bay, 30-20. A 13-5 Golden Eagle run ended the first half in favor of the visitors, 43-27.
Â
The Blue Demons sank six-straight baskets early in the third quarter, a stretch captained by Allen's nine points. The graduate forward totaled 13 of DePaul's 17 third-quarter points, with Marquette extending its lead to 20 by the end of the period, 64-44.
Â
Seven unanswered points by Allen brought the Blue Demons back within 15, 70-55, just over halfway through the fourth quarter. Another DePaul run saw the Scarlet and Blue connect on five-of-six shots from the field late in the fourth quarter before eventually falling 78-59.
