The Blue Demon victory lasted nearly five hours
CORPUS CHRISTI, TEXAS. – DePaul men's tennis clinched its second-straight victory on Friday evening, taking down UT Arlington (UTA) in a tight 4-3 decision to open its stay at the HEB Tournament of Champions. After dropping his first set 6-7(2), junior Sven Moser clinched the victory for the Blue Demons by nabbing the second and third sets, 6-4, 6-4.
Unfavorable weather conditions moved the tournament nine miles northwest to the H-E-B Tennis Center, and as a result, only three courts were accessible at the new venue. The "marathon," as described by head coach Matt Brothers, began at 1:15 p.m. CT and ended around 6:05 p.m. CT, making it the longest match of the season for DePaul.
To begin doubles, Leon Huck and Sven Moser dominated Pedro Sasso/Andres Medus of UT Arlington (3-4) at the No. 3 position, 6-3. Jona Gitschel and Shourya Verma continued their undefeated start at the No. 1 doubles spot, cruising to their third straight victory in a 6-3 decision over the UTA pairing of Dante Teramo/Joan Espinosa to put DePaul in front early, 1-0.
In singles, UTA started off hot, securing victories on the No. 1 and 2 courts. However, the Blue Demons roared back, claiming wins in three of the remaining four singles matches.
Shourya Verma made easy work of his opponent, knocking off Sasso on the No. 4 court in a straight-set victory, 6-1, 6-1. Like Moser, Matteo Iaquinto and his opponent went deep into their third set, with Iaquinto coming out on top in a back-and-forth battle, 7-6 (7-1), 6-7 (3-7), 7-6 (7-4).
In a barn burner that went deep into the fourth hour, Moser finally clinched DePaul's fourth point of the evening, giving the Blue Demons the 4-3 victory, and momentum heading into day two of the HEB Tournament of Champions.
