CHICAGO – DePaul men's tennis dominated Navy on Sunday afternoon in its first appearance against the Midshipmen in program history. The Blue Demons (5-5) defeated Navy (14-4) after an impressive 5-0 start.
"It's important that we continue to improve with each match, regardless of the outcome," said head coach Matt Brothers. "I'm very happy with the results today. Even with the losses that we've had recently, the guys have competed well and the matches have all provided a lot of good teaching moments and takeaways for us," said Brothers. "The schedule is tough, so any win is a good one."
DePaul jumped out to an early lead in doubles, making quick work on the No. 2 and No. 3 courts.
Leon Huck and Sven Moser continued their undefeated campaign as a pair, claiming a victory over Navy's Aniketh Ayinala/J.J. Etterbeek, 6-1. Laurentiu Mandocescu and Matteo Iaquinto triumphed in their first doubles victory of the season with a 6-2 decision over Tommy Kim/Jake Young, giving the Blue Demons a 1-0 match lead.
DePaul came out with a grand slam to begin singles, securing four straight-set victories in the process.
Mandocescu continued his hot afternoon in a convincing performance at the No. 4 position over Nathan Nguyen, 6-0, 6-3. Iaquinto and Moser followed suit, extending the team's streak to three victories, automatically awarding DePaul with the victory.
After falling in the first set to Ayinala, 2-4, Verma answered with four-straight points on his way to sealing the No. 4 court, 6-4, 6-2.
Two back-and-forth battles at No. 1 and No. 6 would eventually end in favor of Navy, making the final score 5-2, DePaul.
