The Blue Demons close out final day of Meyo Invitational
SOUTH BEND – DePaul track and field completed its final day of competition at Notre Dame's Meyo Invitational. The Blue Demons broke three school records and achieved seven top-three finishes.
"The Meyo Invitational was a very productive meet for us this year," said head coach Dave Dopek. "In addition to our broken school records and marks that will move individuals to the top of the Big East conference, we had a solid number of individuals set new personal bests at this meet. Working through a difficult training cycle, while navigating a serious flu/cold season, this team has continued to make the necessary strides to get better as the season progresses. Not everyone is going to have a great day every week. Making progress (no matter how incremental) is key. We are three weeks out from the conference meet and still working toward being the best version of ourselves."
Darius Brown was the first school record breaker of the day. The junior topped his previous school record of 7.71 in the men's 60m hurdles with a final time of 7.70 and a first place finish. The Blue Demon now ranks ninth in the nation.
Damian Rodruiguez took DePaul graduate Shane Knanishu's school record in the men's 1 mile after achieving a final time of 4:03.24. Knanishu earned the record just last year when he ran a final time of 4:05.51 at the GVSU Big Meet.
Brown managed to etch his name into the record book a second time today, after winning the men's 4x400m relay with his teammates, Charles Lewis, Daniel Fasasi and Jarel Terry. The team took gold with a final time of 3:09.48, eclipsing the previous school record by 2.5 seconds. This was the first time a DePaul relay team has ever run under 3:10.
"It was nice to see the performances get better as the meet went on. It shows that the team can turn it up when called upon."
Terry took a first place finish in the men's 400m Championships, running a final time of 47.86. In the men's 400m Open, Fasasi claimed silver after a new personal best with a final time of 47.94.
Alex Bernstein also claimed second and a personal best in the men's weight throw. The junior hit a final mark of 20.83m.
Isabella Orozco took third and a new personal best time in the women's 800m with a 2:11.44 final time. Olivia Borowiak also earned bronze in the women's 3000m with a final time of 9:23.81.
Meghan Dieball and Madison Volz earned new personal best times in the women's 800m, finishing with final times of 2:12.41 and 2:13.63 respectively.
Nina Amicon took a new personal best in the women's 1 mile with a final time of 4:48.70. Nadja Moll and Kayliah Motes also achieved new personal bests in the women's 400m with a final time of 56.12 and 56.80 respectively.
Nevah Lowe ran a personal best time in the women's 60m with a final time of 7.72. While Dominic Cole ran a personal best in the men's 60m with a final time of 6.85.
Lucas Cunningham made his indoor debut as a Blue Demon, finishing with a personal best time of 1:55.26 in the men's 800m Open.
"All in all, this was a good meet for us. We have a couple of things to shore up, but we are continuing to move in the right direction."
