Senior mounts comeback to clinch on court five
CHICAGO – With the match on the line and her back against the wall, Greta Carbone rose to the occasion - clinching DePaul's 4-3 win over Miami (OH) on Friday afternoon at XS Tennis. The senior from Milan, Italy came through on court five after trailing 1-6, 1-4 and then 0-4 in the third set to complete the comeback for the Blue Demons.
"What Greta did leaves me speechless and is just so inspiring. Being down 1-6, 1-4, and 0-4 in the third set and then 4-5 0-50, to come back and win is so unbelievable. In tennis, the match isn't over until it's over, and G really proved that to all of us today," said head coach Marisa Arce.
DePaul (3-4) weathered the storm and saw contributions across all courts in the victory, with three singles matches being pushed to three sets including Carbone's clincher.
"I really couldn't be prouder of the way every member of this team showed up today. It allows us the opportunity to achieve great things. It was a total team effort. Our doubles looked sharp to start off the match and I'm really happy about that."
The Blue Demons started the match strong claiming doubles courts 1 and 2, both by a score of 6-3. Emily Casati and Yuliya Kizelbasheva shined at No. 2 to improve to 11-4 this season as a pair while Carbone and Hannah Smith took care of business at No. 1 to give DePaul the early 1-0 advantage.
Smith continued the momentum from the doubles win into her singles match on court one. Smith took down the RedHawk's Nishitha Saravanan 6-1, 6-2 in a decisive, straight-set victory. This is the second win in three matches in the No. 1 slot for the English native.
Casati pulled the Blue Demons within one point of victory in a back-and-forth battle in three sets.
The graduate student split the first two sets 6-2, 2-6. In the tiebreaker set, Casati jumped out to a 5-1 advantage and continued from there, winning 6-3.
"I'm so happy for the girls to see their hard work paying off and to be able to celebrate this win. It did not come easy."
