
Jalen Terry Has Career Night, Blue Demons Drop Heartbreaker In BIG EAST Tournament

NEW YORK – Jalen Terry had a career performance Wednesday evening, in the first round of the 2024 BIG EAST Tournament, but the DePaul men's basketball team fell just short, 58-57, to Villanova at Madison Square Garden in the first round.
Terry's performance was a record night as his 15 rebounds marked the most ever by a Blue Demon in a BIG EAST Tournament game. He paired that with 18 points for his first career double-double, and also added a team-high five assists. Terry totaled four three-pointers on the night.
As a team, DePaul shared the ball tallying 14 assists and committing seven turnovers. The seven turnovers were the fewest ever by a DePaul team in the BIG EAST Tournament.
HOW IT HAPPENED
DePaul (3-29) held Villanova to just seven points in the first four minutes before scoring themselves on a three-pointer by Chico Carter Jr. Another three for DePaul made it a one-point game, 10-9, at the under 12 media timeout before Villanova went on a 7-0 run for a 17-9 lead. The Blue Demons punched back with a 12-2 run for a 23-21 lead as the first half wound down. Villanova (18-14) hit back-to-back threes for the halftime lead.
Churchill Abass opened the second half with a jumper to quickly tie the game. Terry's hot shooting and an offensive put back by Abass launched a 13-2 run for DePaul taking an eight-point, 40-32, lead. After a 'Nova timeout the Wildcats went on an 8-0 run to tie the game, 40-40. After a field goal by Da'Sean Nelson, Villanova hit a pair of baskets for a three-point lead. Jalen Terry answered with a three-pointer, keeping the game tied. The game remained tied with just a minute left to play as Terry hit a pull up jumper for a two-point, 57-55, lead. Villanova hit a last second three-point shot to go up by one and clinch the victory.

- DePaul gave up its fewest first half points this season (27).
- All eight DePaul players who checked in scored a field goal.
- Terry's 15 boards are the most by a DePaul guard dating back to at least Dec. 20, 2006 when Sammy Mejia nabbed 15.
- Abass tied his career-high in steals with three which also ties the DePaul BIG EAST Tournament record.
